What is this blog?

I have decided to create one more blog - very likely my last. Although I certainly don't feel that education is something separate that requires a separate page, I can see the value of putting all material dealing with issues that are ordinarily called "education" together in one place. This means that this blog will be dedicated to articles that have something to say about schools, not because schools have much to do with education but because that is what most people have in mind when they use the word. I will also include preschools and universities - again because most people include such institutions in their concept of education. By progressive education I mean an approach to education that was popularly called "progressive education" in the early decades of the twentieth century as well as the approach of those involved in the free schools, progressive schools and alternative schools that sprang up in the late 1960s and 1970s, those who advocated deschooling at around the same time and the more recent phenomenon of homeschooling. Some of the key educational theorists, practitioners and authors I will mention are John Dewey, A S Neill, Paul Goodman, Paolo Freire, Ivan Illich, John Holt, George Dennison, Herbert Kohl, Jonothan Kozol, Leila Berg, Erich Fromm, Carl Rogers and Wilhelm Reich. The aproach that was sometimes called "humanistic education" is also included here, as is the current "democratic education". I hope I haven't inundated you with all these words and people. I know exactly what it is I will be covering and this is my somewhat clumsy way of communicating this to you, the reader. I hope you will find plenty to enjoy, to think about and to comment on. Happy reading.
